FAQs

What Does A Health Coach Do?

Health Coaching is a process that facilitates healthy, sustainable behavior change by challenge you to *Identify your values, *Develop your self-mastery skills and *Transform your goals into results.

My ultimate goal through Health Coaching is to improve your quality of life through health habits and effective changes.

With me as your Health & Wellness co-pilot, we’ll work together to develop a customized plan that takes your individual physical, emotional and lifestyle factors into account and fits with the way you live — and ultimately leads you to permanent, positive change.

How Long Do Clients Work With You?

It varies, but I typically encourage client to commit to a minimum of 3 months. This time frame is based on the principles for behavior change and allows my clients to make sustainable healthy behavior changes through small steps and repetition. I do offer shorter programs that serve to introduce clients to coaching and allow them to build confidence in their personal change. My belief is;

“It takes 4 weeks for you to see a change, 8 weeks for your friends to see a change and 12 weeks for the rest of the world to notice!”

Is There Research That Shows Health Coaching Actually Works?

Yes. Research in the field is on the rise, and there are numerous clinical studies that have already demonstrated positive health outcomes for individuals who work with health coaches in areas such as chronic disease management and prevention.

A study conducted by Edelman et al. using multidimensional interventions, including health coaching designed to make favorable changes in patient behavior, concluded that there was a statistically significant reduction in the 10-year risk of coronary heart disease. [2]

Research conducted by Wolever et al. (2006) suggests that integrative health coaching can help patients reduce their risk of diabetes and stroke. [3]

Patients with Type 2 diabetes improved medication adherence, exercise frequency and glycemic control when they received 6 months of health coaching.[4]

What Is The Difference Between A Health Coach And Life Coach?

Health coaches focus specifically on health related-issues with their clients, while life coaches typically focus on a broader range of life factors.

Does Online Coaching Work?

Coaching has evolved! What was once a face-to-face session usually confined to a fixed setting has now become convenient and easy to access. Through technologies like smartphones and wireless internet that can now replicate the functions of an in person session. The result? Geographical locations and fixed schedules are no longer barriers to Health Coaching.

A study published in The Annual Review of Public Health highlights the effectiveness of digitally enable health promotion in improving positive behavior change and improved outcomes among patients.

Their conclusion is strengthened by other recent meta-studies such as  Mobile Text Messaging for Health: A Systematic Review of Reviews that showed :

Remote telephonic and web-based health promotion yielding nearly identical positive behavior change and outcomes with patients to regular face-to-face visits.

Could Online Coaching Be Right For You!

And online coaching has clearly been shown to work.

Online coaching is well suited for busy people on the go with no spare time, those who travel a lot, and those who don’t like going to the gym.

Here is a quick 2 question checklist to see if online coaching is right for you:

1) The number one factor to consider in virtual coaching is your level of technology savvy. (You don’t need to be a WIz-Kid).

* Are you comfortable doing video conferencing or instant messaging on you smartphone / tablet / computer or do you need a PC and IT support?

2) Does it fit your personality type?

* Studies show that introverts tend to perform well in electronic conversations, and even prefer a healthy distance over face-to-face conversations.

When To Consider A Health Coach

Sooner Than Later!

You know what you should be doing. But are you actually doing it?

* You gain weight but can’t seem to lose it.

* You can’t shake off your fatigue.

* You can’t sustain healthy eating for more than a few days.

* You can’t sustain a fitness program for more than a few weeks.

* You realize you simply can’t keep doing what you are doing.

* You realize that if you could do this by yourself, you would have done it by now!

It turns out that we humans need others for accountability, motivation and a sense of becoming and belonging. It’s the missing ingredient from health apps and fitness wearables.  I would like to get a feel for how you work with clients.
